What is the Church sabbath?
Calvary Chapel Clayton will take a 3 month Sabbath by ceasing and resting from major Church Events, Outreaches and Missions. We will take this time as a Church to focus inward and minister to one another. We will be offering a School of Ministry during this time. We will continue to have Sunday and Wednesday services along with all our Small Groups. Our Church Sabbath will be from August - October, 2019. You can get more info on the School of Ministry below.
What is a sabbath?
Sabbath in the Hebrew means a Day of Atonement, but its root means to cease, to celebrate, to rest. This rest is not one of letting our guard down or taking a break from what we are called to do. It's a time to draw close to Jesus and one another. To worship, pray and rejoice in the Lord.
Jesus did this Himself. In Mark 6:30-32 we read, “Then the apostles gathered to Jesus and told Him all things, both what they had done and what they had taught. And He said to them, 'Come aside by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.' For there were many coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat. So they departed to a deserted place in the boat by themselves.”
Jesus teachings on the Sabbath said that “the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath." He also taught that works of necessity and charity were always allowed on the Sabbath. Jesus teaches us that the heart of the Sabbath is to be a blessing for man and a time for man to bless God.
